Ashcroft now claims that the section of the Patriot Act allowing the FBI to obtain a list of books you bought at a bookstore or checked out from a library has never been invoked. Bloggers like The Liquid List figured out this is false. It’s not hard. The claim is disproved by a June 2002 Associated Press report. (Via TalkLeft). Of course, if the newspapers are going to be used to prove he’s a liar, maybe John should just sweep them into Patriot Act II and shut ’em down. (Or else he just needs to get Winston from Orwell’s 1984 working a bit faster revising those old editions.)
