Serenity box office thumbs up or down?

Serenity was Number 2 at the box office this weekend, raking in an estimated $10.1 million.

A few commentators says it’s a “tepid” opening, “one of the year’s biggest flops” and that it “pretty much kills off the Firefly/Serenity universe.” I guess box office numbers are another thing I don’t understand. As I read the numbers, Serenity (1) was the biggest grossing new movie of the weekend, (2) pulled in more per theater than the weekend’s top-grossing movie, Flight Plan, and (3) had a bigger box office than the highly praised A History of Violence in its first two weeks (although that movie was on fewer screens and in very limited release its first week).

Of course, I’m sure the Big Damn Heroes won’t let their Big Damn Movie go down without a fight.

Can I suggest something that doesn’t involve violence, or is this the wrong crowd for that?

I saw this on Saturday. I wasn’t a fan of the firefly series until about 2 weeks ago. This was one of the best movies I have seen in years.
