Iowa author and peace activist Mike Palecek will be appearing at Zandbroz Variety in downtown Sioux Falls the evening of Friday, April 6, as part of the tour for his new book, The American Dream. I have been horribly remiss in not mentioning this before since Mike was kind enough to give me a heads up quite some time ago.
According to Palecek, “The book is a satire based in a small Midwestern community — a town asleep in time of war — asleep at work, asleep at church, asleep at the wheel. The bus is headed toward a gigantic cliff and nobody is aware or seems to care. The people sleep, through the alarm, the house afire.” I’ve read two of his prior books, Looking for Bigfoot and Terror Nation, and both are blunt and forthright views of the state of America today. He’s pretty clear that we shouldn’t expect anything different from the new book. He noted in a recent internet post about the tour that the book “is a punch in the nose to George W. Bush and Karl Rove. Somebody needs to punch those two in the nose. They smirk while others die. They are getting away with murder. They are robbing us blind.”
Palecek’s book tour will take him throughout the country between now and July 3. He says it “is a modern-day ride of Paul Revere, carrying along the writings of Thomas Paine, warning the people of the coming of fascism by the perpetrators of 9/11 — the liars, the murderers, the charlatans of this current United States government.”
Although Palecek will likely be arriving in his brown 1990 Honda, not a horse, Friday night is a good opportunity to see a man who not only writes what he thinks, but tries to act upon his beliefs. Any more that tends to be a rare commodity.
