Obiter dicta

  • I know I’m probably a relic but I still — and probably always will — sleep on a waterbed. Well, do you know how gorram hard it is to find a waterbed mattress these days?!?! The store where I last bought one now only will order one for you. Hell, if I wanted to order one I could do it on the internet. I finally found one in town at Hom Furniture, making it my favorite furniture store. Of course, the price of a mattress is now about what it cost for the entire bed before, including frame and heater, when I first bought one.
  • Another sign of how times have changed, Forbes Magazine of all places has a piece on the 30th anniversary of Springsteen’s Born to Run.
  • But to show I’m not entirely an old fart (or that I’m nearing senility), I went to Rainbow Sportscards over the noon hour today to buy ….. comic books. Given my love of the Firefly television series and anticipation of the forthcoming Serenity movie, I bought the first two installments of a three-part Serenity comic book series. Having heard over the weekend that the first printing of the first installment has sold out, I called Rainbow and, fortunately, it still had it on hand. The price of comic books, too, has gone up several thousand percent since I last recall buying one. Given what these same issues are selling on eBay for, though, I’ll call them an “investment.”
  • And now for something completely different: LeftyBlogs.com is launching this week. In addition to providing a state-by-state listing, it provides a feed, updated every 10 minutes, of the latest local content from about 600 left/liberal/progressive blogs around the country.
