Banned Books Week starts today. You shouldn’t spend it celebrating the banning of books. Celebrate the books that have been banned or the subject of banning efforts. The American Library Association has plenty of good suggestions on how to mark the week (such as putting a badge on your blog like the one at the top of the far right sidebar).
It’s really a shame that in the 21st Century we’re still talking about books being banned. And if you think this is all much ado about books that really shouldn’t be on library or school bookshelves, take a look at what’s on the list of the most challenged books of the 21st Century.
If your library is not “unsafe,” it probably isn’t doing its job.
