Public Service Announcement

While I tend to avoid these types of things, with the election just two weeks away I am going to break from tradition and post what the media would call a PSA.
The South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families, the group heading up the effort to overturn South Dakota’s abortion ban, is planning a “Stand Up [...]

Stepping into the abortion ban debate

With the election almost upon us and the dust up over campaign ads continuing, it’s time to stick my nose into yet another ballot issue.
Supporters of the abortion law referred for a public vote (Referred Law 6) are being called to task because recent television ads said the ban contains an exception for the health [...]

Stegmeier working on the next ballot initiative

He’s back at it. Even before voters have expressed their views on Amendment E (J.A.I.L.), South Dakota J.A.I.L.er-in-chief Bill Stegmeier is working to put another extremist idea before the voters.
Gene Chapman is running for president in 2008. Who is Gene Chapman? He is an individual behind such concepts as the “Slave Freedom/Mark [...]

A worthy political item

Although he and I come from wholly different ends of the political spectrum, I am happy to call Joel Rosenthal, former state GOP chairman, a friend of mine. Why are we friends? While we disagree, there is a mutual respect that stems from being honest with each other about what we think and [...]

How I spent 9/11

It may have been a perfect way for an American to spend the fifth anniversary of 9/11: aboard a cruise ship on the Ionian Sea en route from Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Greece, and then Turkey. While the setting and travel are obvious reasons why, there are many others.
With few English language newspapers, no U.S. [...]

Ramifications of the execution decision

Okay, everybody now knows Gov. Mike Rounds temporarily delayed Elijah Page’s execution because of concerns over the execution procedure. I will leave to political pundits the impact, if any, of that decision on his re-election bid and that of Attorney General Larry Long (who, given the ballot question decisions, doesn’t seem to be having [...]

Interesting quandry

Tooday’s court ruling setting South Dakota’s first execution in 59 years jsut two weeks from now could pose some interesting questions for the pro-life movement in South Dakota, particularly Catholics.
The court order allows Elijah Page to be executed at the South Dakota Penitentiary the week of August 28. Page pleaded guilty to the kidnapping [...]

Herseth changing position or riding the political winds?

Why do I so often have to chortle at things Rep. Stephanie Herseth says? Today’s local daily gives another prime example.
According to the daily: “In both Iraq and in Lebanon, Congress has abdicated its oversight responsibility and has not forced President Bush to account for policies or a lack of policy, Herseth said. An [...]

A Herseth laugher?

Here’s something that’s bothered me from the moment I read it. I was willing to let it slide until two votes this week.
Stephanie Herseth told the state Democratic Convention last month, “Not a week goes by where I don’t wonder what it would be like to be in the majority party.” If you [...]

Abortion task force chairwoman speaks out

Via Coat Hangers at Dawn, I see one of the “pro-life” members of South Dakota’s Abortion Task Force is speaking out about what happened in the preparation of the Task Force’s report. (PDF file). You may recall that “pro-choice” members were so offended by it they walked out of the final meeting and [...]

Those voting records just don’t go away

Plenty of state legislators have sought cover for the rejection of a rape and incest exception in the new abortion ban by pointing out the bill includes a provision allowing for use of so-called emergency contraceptives if administered prior to the time pregnancy could be determined. Yet their voting records indicate this is pretty [...]

Abortion and J.A.I.L.

Somebody mentioned that there seems to be a number of political oriented posts appearing here lately despite my earlier vow to move this blog away from politics and toward things that actually add meaning to life. Perhaps it is rationalization but I don’t necessarily view the recent increase as inconsistent.
Why? Because as the [...]

Pondering the abortion ban

Something that always bothers me about the abortion debate is the tendency to cast it in black and white terms. Proponents of South Dakota’s new abortion law seem to think abortion is used only for birth control. Opponents tend to focus on rape and incest and the desirability of letting the woman choose [...]

Bill of Rights updated

A Slate satirist provides us with a copy of the new Bill of Rights. Please don’t let the South Dakota Legislature see this. It might get ideas.
Can any of you seriously say the Bill of Rights could get through Congress today? It wouldn’t even get out of committee.
F. Lee Bailey, Newsweek, April [...]

Abortion ban signed into law

Within the last hour or so, Gov. Mike Rounds signed the restrictive abortion bill into law. Rounds issued a statementt on signing the bill.
Let the litigation and petition circulating begin.
Our task, of course, is to resolve the issue by constitutional measurement, free of emotion and of predilection.
Majority opinion, Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113, [...]
