Historical hockey homage

First off, a big tip of the hat to Chris at his new Western College Hockey II blog for leading me to Hockey: Canada’s Royal Winter Game. Published in 1899, it is thought to be the first book ever written about the sport. And the author, Arthur Farrell, came with pretty good credentials [...]

The cup

Congrats to former Sioux Falls Stampede player Chad LaRose, who will now have his name inscribed on the Stanley Cup as a member of the winning Carolina Hurricanes.
LaRose was a member of the Stampede in its first year of existence and played part of year two before moving to the Ontario Hockey League. He [...]

The agony of defeat

It would be remiss of me to let the USHL season close without commenting on the Stampede loss in the Clark Cup championship. Despite all the talk about holding their heads high and the like, I have no doubt every member of that team feels bad today. Going from last place last year [...]

Another of my diversions

As my state loses its third soldier in three days and prepares to ban most abortions, my antipathy leads me to talk about something less dispiriting: hockey. After all, my Stampede have excelled this year line and I haven’t said much about hockey. So I figure it’s about that time to bring that [...]

The season begins

Before my still ongoing boycott of major league baseball began with the players’ strike in 1994, I used to declare that opening day of the major league season meant God was back in his rightful place in the universe. That now applies to the Sioux Falls Stampede and the United State Hockey League.
The Stampede open [...]

The season approaches

I picked up my Sioux Falls Stampede season tickets over the noon hour today. (The season opening home game is Saturday, Sept. 24). My usual pre-season desire was reinforced by an ad in Sunday’s paper that appears to be part of a tremendous new ad campaign.
The ad copy reads:
When you’re playing for a chance
instead of [...]

FSN to the rescue

I was somewhat disappointed that, for the first time in years, I wasn’t going to get to the WCHA Final Five hockey tournament, an NCAA regional or the Frozen Four itself. Fox Sports Net has come to my rescue, though. Not only is it televising all five WCHA games, it is also showing part of [...]

And now, for something important:

Most people who happen to pick up a sports page or occasionally tune in to ESPN have heard: a lock-out makes an NHL season unlikely. Who cares?
The Stampede begin USHL regular season play tonight. And after a cellar-dwelling season last year, hope springs eternal with the Pede ranked fifth in pre-season ratings.
NCAA hockey [...]

World Cup

Having spent hundreds on tickets and motel rooms and endured lots of windshield time in three trips between here and St. Paul in the course of 8 days, I figure I should make a couple observations on the World Cup of Hockey.
There can’t be much like an international sporting event. You certainly don’t get [...]

Hockey time

Will be even quieter than normal. While I will be posting at least one item before I leave, it’s off to the WCHA Tournament. Based on current rankings, three of the top 5 Div. I hockey teams are in the five-team field. Even though I have no Frozen Four tickets this year [...]

Time for the important stuff

Time to set aside political stuff for important things. USHL hockey starts today. Who cares about the NHL? This and college hockey, particularly NCAA Division I play, involve guys playing because of the game, not money. Locally, there’s a whole new look. Keep up with the fans (and alumni) this [...]
